No European Major in 2027: Perfect World Confirms China Hosts the Second CS2 Major

Both Counter-Strike 2 Majors in 2027 will take place outside Europe. Perfect World has officially confirmed that the second Major of the year will be held in China. This marks a historic moment for Counter-Strike, as Europe will not host a single Major throughout the entire year for the first time in the history of the competition.

Reports about China hosting the second CS2 Major of 2027 first appeared in January 2026. At the time, however, the information was based entirely on insider sources. That changed on September 13, when Perfect World officially confirmed that the tournament would take place in China.

Perfect World Officially Confirms the 2027 CS2 Major in China

On September 13, 2026, Chinese company Perfect World confirmed that the second CS2 Major of 2027 would be held in China. The announcement appeared in the official Perfect World Esports app as part of celebrations marking the ninth anniversary of Counter-Strike's launch in the Chinese market.

The company invited users to guess which city would host the upcoming tournament. The contest rules explicitly stated that the 2027 Major would take place in China.

Two days later, on September 15, Perfect World revealed that Shanghai would be the host city. This confirmed the reports published by journalists back in January about the Major returning to China.

This will be the second Counter-Strike Major organized by Perfect World. In December 2024, the company hosted the Perfect World Shanghai Major, where Team Spirit defeated FaZe Clan in the grand final to claim their first Major championship.

Where Will the CS2 Majors Take Place in 2027?

The first CS2 Major of 2027 will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The tournament, officially named FiRe Major Buenos Aires 2027, is scheduled to run from May 31 to June 20. It will be organized by FiReSPORTS, a tournament operator known for hosting events under the FiReLEAGUE brand.

This will be Argentina's first Counter-Strike Major. South America has previously hosted only one tournament of this level, the IEM Rio Major 2022 in Brazil.

The second Major will take place in Shanghai, China, from November 22 to December 12, 2027. Perfect World will organize the event, returning as a Major tournament operator after its successful debut in 2024.

The exact venues for both tournaments have yet to be announced. In Buenos Aires, Movistar Arena is considered a potential location, as FiReSPORTS has previously organized esports events there.

In Shanghai, the organizers could return to the venues used during the 2024 Major. The group stages of that tournament were held at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center, while the playoffs took place at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. However, no official venue announcements have been made for the 2027 event.

Europe Will Be Without a CS2 Major for the First Time

The most significant aspect of the 2027 Major calendar is that both tournaments will take place outside Europe.

Since the introduction of Counter-Strike Majors in 2013, European countries have regularly hosted the most prestigious competitions in the game. Major championships have taken place in Sweden, Poland, Germany, France, Belgium, and several other European countries.

In 2027, that tradition will be broken. The first Major will be hosted in South America, while the second will take place in Asia. This makes 2027 the first year with two scheduled Majors in which neither tournament will be held on European soil.

The series of Majors outside Europe will actually begin at the end of 2026. PGL Major Singapore 2026 is scheduled to take place from November 25 to December 13.

As a result, three consecutive Counter-Strike Majors will be held outside Europe. The last European Major before this series was IEM Cologne Major 2026 in Germany.

It is worth noting that no Majors were held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the situation in 2027 is different, as both tournaments are scheduled to take place outside Europe rather than being canceled.

Why Is the CS2 Major Returning to China?

The decision to bring another Counter-Strike Major to Shanghai is understandable. Perfect World is the official publisher of Counter-Strike in China and already has experience organizing tournaments at the highest competitive level.

Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 was the first Counter-Strike Major held in China. The tournament attracted international attention, with its grand final ending in a historic victory for Team Spirit over FaZe Clan.

China also has well-developed infrastructure for hosting major esports competitions. Shanghai has previously welcomed international championships in Dota 2, League of Legends, and Valorant.

Another possible factor is Valve's interest in expanding Counter-Strike's global reach. Hosting Majors in Asia and South America gives the game an opportunity to attract new audiences and strengthen its presence in growing esports markets.

However, Valve and Perfect World have not publicly explained the specific reasons behind choosing Shanghai for the second Major of 2027.

What Do We Know About Perfect World Shanghai Major 2027?

The country, host city, and tournament organizer for the second Major of 2027 have now been confirmed. The championship will take place in Shanghai, with the event scheduled from November 22 to December 12.

The tournament is expected to follow the familiar structure of modern CS2 Majors, featuring multiple stages leading up to the playoffs. The anticipated prize pool is $1.25 million.

However, the organizers have not yet revealed the venues, ticket sale dates, or detailed match schedule.

The return of the Major to Shanghai will also give Chinese teams another opportunity to compete in front of their home crowd. At the 2024 tournament, Rare Atom was the only Chinese representative but failed to advance far into the competition.

CS2 Majors Continue Expanding Beyond Europe

Perfect World's announcement has established the locations of both Counter-Strike 2 Majors scheduled for 2027. The first championship will take place in Argentina, while the second will be hosted in China.

The key difference compared to the information that emerged in January is the official confirmation. Previously, the possibility of a Chinese Major was based on insider reports. Now, Perfect World has confirmed that the tournament will return to Shanghai.

2027 will be a historic year for Counter-Strike, with both scheduled Majors taking place outside Europe for the first time. For Valve, this represents another step toward expanding the game's international competitive scene. For fans in Argentina and China, it offers an opportunity to experience the biggest CS2 tournaments on home soil.
