Steam Guard & Trade Holds for CS2: Set Up 2FA and Skip the 15-Day Hold
Steam Guard & Trade Holds for CS2: Set Up 2FA and Skip the 15-Day Hold

When trading skins on Steam, you might run into an annoying situation: both sides confirm the trade, but the items are held for 15 days. This usually happens because of account security settings or the absence of the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator.
However, CS2 trading rules have changed. The traditional trade hold has been replaced by a system called Trade Protection. Here's how it works and what you need to set up to avoid unnecessary restrictions.

What Is Steam Guard?
Steam Guard is Steam's two-factor authentication (2FA) system. It adds an extra layer of security to your account, making it harder for someone to access your inventory without permission.
There are two ways to verify your identity:
Email verification. Steam sends a security code when you sign in from a new device.
Mobile authentication. The Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator lets you approve sign-ins and confirm trades directly from your phone.
If you trade regularly, the mobile authenticator is the better option. Email verification alone won't prevent the standard 15-day trade hold.
How to Enable Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator
Setting up Steam Guard only takes a few minutes:
Download the official Steam mobile app for Android or iOS.
Sign in to your Steam account.
Open the Steam Guard section by tapping the shield icon.
Follow the instructions to activate the mobile authenticator and verify your phone number if Steam requests an SMS code.
Save your recovery code somewhere safe in case you lose access to your phone.
Once activated, your mobile authenticator must remain enabled for at least seven days before you can avoid the standard 15-day hold on eligible Steam trades.
There's no legitimate way to shorten this waiting period using third-party websites or software.
Why Does Steam Hold Trades for 15 Days?
A trade hold is a temporary delay before items are delivered to their new owners. Steam uses it to protect inventories if an account gets compromised.
Under Steam's standard trading rules, items can be held for up to 15 days if the mobile authenticator isn't enabled or has been active for less than seven days.
To avoid this delay, enable Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator in advance and keep it active.
There's one important exception: CS2 no longer uses the traditional 15-day trade hold. Instead, it uses Trade Protection.
How Trade Protection Works in CS2
With Trade Protection, CS2 items are delivered immediately after both sides confirm a trade. You no longer have to wait 15 days to receive your skins.
Instead, the received items remain protected for seven days.
During this period, you can equip and use them in matches, but you can't trade, modify, or consume them.
Trade Protection also allows eligible trades to be reversed during this seven-day window. If a player initiates a reversal, Steam reverses all their eligible protected trades from the previous seven days and applies a 30-day trading and Community Market restriction to their account.
The seven-day Trade Protection period cannot be skipped, even if you've been using Steam Guard for years.
What Can Trigger Trading Restrictions?
Even with Steam Guard enabled, certain account changes can temporarily restrict trading.
For example, removing your mobile authenticator can trigger a 15-day restriction, while transferring it to a new phone usually results in a two-day restriction.
Canceling an accepted trade that's already on hold can also lead to a seven-day trading restriction.
That's why it's better to use Steam's authenticator transfer feature when switching phones instead of removing Steam Guard completely.
Be careful with websites promising to remove trade holds instantly. These restrictions are enforced by Steam, and third-party services cannot legitimately bypass them.

How to Trade CS2 Skins Safely
Steam Guard helps protect your account, but it doesn't prevent every scam. Fake Steam login pages and fraudulent trade offers are still common ways to steal skins.
Before confirming a trade, always check the recipient and the items involved. Never share your Steam Guard codes, approve unfamiliar login requests, or sign in through suspicious links.
If someone asks you to disable Steam Guard to complete a trade, it's best to walk away.
