Best CS2 Cases for Knives: Odds & Costs in 2026
Best CS2 Cases for Knives in 2026: Odds & Cost-Per-Knife Compared

If your goal is to find the best CS2 case with a chance of dropping a knife, it is easy to focus only on the most famous options such as Spectrum, Gamma, or Breakout. But for a proper comparison, two things matter more: how much one opening costs and which knives are actually available in the gold slot.
Standard Valve weapon cases have around a 0.26% chance of dropping a rare special item, or roughly 1 in 385 openings. In cases with knives, this gold drop is the knife. The probability itself barely changes from case to case - what changes is the opening cost and the pool of possible knives.
That is why we calculated the approximate average cost of getting one knife from each case. This figure shows how much you would theoretically spend when continuously opening the same case, including the case price and the standard $2.49 key.

How to Calculate the Cost of Getting a Knife
The calculation is simple:
Case price + $2.49 key = cost of one opening.
Then divide the opening cost by the knife probability - 0.0026.
For example, if a case costs $0.70:
$0.70 + $2.49 = $3.19 per opening
$3.19 / 0.0026 = approximately $1,227 per knife
There is one important detail, however. This does not mean that a knife is guaranteed after spending $1,227. Every opening is independent of the previous one.
Even after approximately 385 cases, the probability of seeing at least one gold drop is only around 63%. You need roughly 267 openings for about a 50% chance, while reaching around 90% requires close to 885 openings.
Case prices are based on Steam Market levels from early September 2026 and have been rounded. The market changes every day.
Kilowatt Case - The Cheapest Route to a Knife

Case price: around $0.20
Opening cost: around $2.69
Theoretical cost per knife: around $1,035
Based purely on the math, the Kilowatt Case currently looks like the cheapest option if your only goal is to get any knife.
Its rare special item pool contains only the Kukri Knife, available with several classic finishes including Fade, Slaughter, Case Hardened, and Crimson Web. The chance of hitting the gold slot remains the standard approximately 0.26%.
The main advantage is obvious: the case itself adds almost nothing to the key price. The downside is that the knife pool is limited to a single model. If you want a Butterfly, Karambit, or Skeleton Knife, Kilowatt is not suitable regardless of how cheap it is.
Fracture Case - A Cheap Chance at a Skeleton Knife

Case price: $0.70
Opening cost: $3.19
Theoretical cost per knife: around $1,227
Fracture is slightly more expensive than Kilowatt, but its gold pool is much more interesting in terms of knife models. It includes:
Skeleton Knife, Nomad Knife, Paracord Knife, and Survival Knife.
These knives are available with classic finishes such as Fade, Slaughter, Case Hardened, and Crimson Web.
Because of this, Fracture can be considered one of the best affordable cases if your main target is the Skeleton Knife, as long as you are willing to accept the possibility of getting one of the other three models instead.
Fever Case - Modern Finishes

Case price: $0.85
Opening cost: $3.34
Theoretical cost per knife: around $1,285
The Fever Case uses the same four core knife models - Skeleton, Nomad, Paracord, and Survival - but the finish pool is different.
It includes Doppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth, Damascus Steel, Ultraviolet, and Rust Coat, with especially expensive results such as Skeleton Knife | Doppler.
The difference in theoretical knife cost compared with Fracture is only around $60. So if you care more about potentially getting a more attractive finish than minimizing the opening cost, Fever may be the more appealing option.
Dreams & Nightmares Case - Butterfly and Gamma Finishes

Case price: $1.60
Opening cost: around $4.09
Theoretical cost per knife: around $1,575
Dreams & Nightmares is noticeably more expensive, but its gold pool includes:
Butterfly Knife, Bowie Knife, Huntsman Knife, Falchion Knife, and Shadow Daggers.
Its main attraction is the Gamma family of finishes. Possible drops include Gamma Doppler, Lore, Autotronic, Black Laminate, Freehand, and Bright Water.
This is one of the more affordable cases that gives you a chance at a Butterfly Knife. However, Butterfly is only one of five knife models, so the 0.26% gold chance should not be interpreted as the chance of getting a Butterfly specifically.
Prisma 2 Case - A Good Balance of Price and Knives

Case price: $1.85
Opening cost: $4.34
Theoretical cost per knife: around $1,670
Prisma 2 contains four knife models:
Talon Knife, Stiletto Knife, Ursus Knife, and Navaja Knife.
The main strength of the case is its finish pool: Doppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth, Damascus Steel, Rust Coat, and Ultraviolet. Among the most expensive potential results are Talon Doppler Ruby, Sapphire, and Black Pearl.
If you want to open a case with a chance at an attractive Doppler but Gamma 2 already feels too expensive, Prisma 2 is a more affordable alternative.
Spectrum 2 Case - Expensive, but With Butterfly Knife

Case price: $4.30
Opening cost: $6.79
Theoretical cost per knife: around $2,600
Spectrum 2 contains Butterfly Knife, Bowie Knife, Falchion Knife, Huntsman Knife, and Shadow Daggers with finishes such as Doppler, Marble Fade, and Tiger Tooth.
Butterfly Knife | Doppler, Marble Fade, and Tiger Tooth are especially attractive potential drops. However, the high price of the case itself almost doubles the theoretical cost of a gold drop compared with Fracture or Fever.
Gamma 2 Case - Karambit and M9

Case price: $4.40
Opening cost: $6.89
Theoretical cost per knife: around $2,650
Gamma 2 has one of the strongest gold pools among older cases:
Karambit, M9 Bayonet, Bayonet, Flip Knife, and Gut Knife.
Available finishes include Gamma Doppler, including Emerald, as well as Lore, Autotronic, Black Laminate, Freehand, and Bright Water.
From a cost perspective, Gamma 2 can no longer be called economical. But if your goal is a chance at premium classic models such as Karambit or M9 Bayonet, its knife pool is much more attractive than that of cheaper modern cases.
Operation Breakout - The Most Direct Route to Butterfly

The Operation Breakout Weapon Case already costs around $11-12, which means one opening comes to roughly $14.30. With the same 0.26% rare special item probability, the theoretical cost of one gold drop exceeds $5,400.
However, this case has one unique advantage: its rare knife slot is dedicated to the Butterfly Knife.
So if the question is not “what is the cheapest way to get any knife?” but rather “which case should I open for a Butterfly?”, Breakout remains a special option.
The price of that specialization, however, is very high.

Which Knife Case Is Best in 2026?
If you only care about the cost of each attempt, the winner is the Kilowatt Case. With an opening cost of around $2.69, its theoretical cost per knife drop comes to approximately $1,035.
If you want a more interesting knife pool, Fracture and Fever offer Skeleton and Nomad knives at roughly $1,200-1,300 in theoretical spending per knife drop. Prisma 2 is suitable for Talon and Stiletto, while Dreams & Nightmares is a good choice for players who want a chance at Butterfly Knife with Gamma finishes.
Spectrum 2, Gamma 2, and especially Breakout are significantly more expensive, but they are opened not for the lowest cost per attempt, but for specific knife models and premium finishes.
Most importantly, a cheaper case does not make the knife itself more likely to drop. The standard probability remains around 0.26%. A cheaper case simply lowers the cost of each individual attempt.
