Opening Cases on Site vs In-Game: Odds, Prices & Transparency Compared

CS2 case opening modes and rewards

Opening cases in CS2 can be viewed in different ways. For some players, it is the classic in-game experience: a case, a key, a random item, and the Steam inventory. For others, flexibility matters more: choosing a case based on budget, opening a themed selection, using additional modes, or instantly exchanging the drop on the site.

That is why comparing a case opening site vs Steam is not only about price. It is important to look at the full player experience: how much one attempt costs, what opening options are available, whether bonuses can be used, how quickly an item can be received or replaced, and how much control the player has.

How In-Game Case Opening Works

In the game, everything works in a familiar way: the player needs an official case and a separate key. The case can be received through in-game rewards or bought on the market, while the key is purchased separately. After opening, the system gives one random item from that case’s item pool.

The advantage of this format is simplicity and the official ecosystem. You open the container directly in CS2, and the item goes to your Steam inventory. But this format also has limitations: you cannot choose a case based on a specific budget, weapon type, loadout color, or desired skin category.

Another important point is the cost. The final opening price consists of the case price and the key price. Even if the case itself looks cheap, a key is still required for every attempt. Because of that, a series of openings can quickly become more expensive than it seemed at first.

What Changes When Opening on Farmskins

On Farmskins, cases are opened without buying separate keys. The player immediately sees the case price and chooses the format that matches their goal: cheap cases, knife cases, glove cases, AWP, AK-47, M4, themed selections, or premium options.

The main difference is variety and flexibility. The site offers many case categories: from budget and classic cases to expensive cases with rare drops. This is convenient if the player does not want to be limited only to the standard set of in-game containers.

Legacy Cases are also worth mentioning separately. They are located in the CS:GO Legacy section. These cases are inspired by CS2 in-game containers: Prisma, Fracture, Clutch Case, Danger Zone, Dreams & Nightmares, Recoil, and others. On Farmskins, these Legacy cases cost less than the total price of the official case and key in the game, so the player sees a clearer opening price without extra calculations. On the Farmskins main page, all these CS Legacy cases cost $0.99.

Opening Modes

Another difference on Farmskins is the availability of additional opening modes.

Terminal Mode works like a series of offers. The player starts the mode and receives up to five offers during the current session. Offers appear one after another, and once you go back, you cannot return to the previous offer. If you like the item, you can accept it and finish the session.

Target Mode is designed for players who want to open a case with a more specific goal. In this mode, cheaper items are removed from the pool, only skins that cost more than the case remain, and the player selects one target item. As a result, you can receive the selected skin or a compensation drop.

Ultimate Mode is an additional mode for selected cases on Farmskins. In this mode, the opening can differ from the standard version: the pool of possible items may be reduced, and the opening price may be lower than usual. In some cases, Ultimate Mode can also provide increased Bullets earnings, but this depends on the specific case and the terms shown on the site.

That is why it is better to check the case page before opening: there you can see whether Ultimate Mode is available, how much it costs, and which items are included in the pool.

This way, our site turns case opening from a single random click into a choice between different scenarios: classic opening, trying to catch a specific target, a series of offers, or a more affordable mode for selected cases.

Cashback, Bullets, and Crystals

On Farmskins, players can use more than just balance. For opening cases, cashback is awarded in the form of Bullets: you receive up to 3% from every opened case. This is an internal currency that can be used for additional platform features: for example, opening cases, joining activities, or using other site mechanics. Bullets can be exchanged in Gaben’s Store, used to open cases, or applied in Upgrade.

Another internal currency is Crystals. They can be earned through activity: opening cases, gaining XP, leveling up, completing tasks, and also, for example, by making a correct Pick’em prediction, which is often held on the site before major tournaments. Crystals are used for Reward Cases and some platform activities.

This makes opening more flexible: part of the activity returns to the player as additional opportunities instead of ending with only one drop.

Withdrawing and Exchanging Drops

After opening a case, the item appears in your Farmskins inventory. You can withdraw it to Steam through a trade offer: select the skin, click withdraw, and confirm the trade in Steam.

Usually, withdrawal is fast, but sometimes sending the item may take time because of Steam, the trade link, or item restrictions. That is why it is important to check Steam Guard, your public inventory settings, and the correct trade URL before withdrawing.

If the drop does not fit your inventory, you do not have to withdraw it immediately. The skin can be used directly on the site: sent to Upgrade, exchanged through Skin Changer, or used in other mechanics. If the item has a Steam trade restriction, you can wait for delivery or choose another available skin without waiting.

More Choice on Farmskins

Valve has already started changing the familiar approach to getting skins. Instead of the standard “case + key” format, CS2 introduced the Genesis Uplink Terminal - a new type of container where the player opens a terminal and receives several offers to buy a skin from the collection. This shows that the traditional CS2 case system may gradually change over time.

On Farmskins, we keep freedom of choice: players can open regular cases, try Terminal Mode, Target Mode, or Ultimate Mode, use cashback, Crystals, and other mechanics. If you like the terminal format, it is available. If you prefer classic case opening, that option remains available too.

What Should You Choose?

In-game case opening is suitable for players who want the most classic CS2 format: an official case, a key, and a direct connection with Steam.

Farmskins is better for players who want more choice: a wide range of cases, opening without keys, Legacy Cases, different opening modes, cashback, Crystals, fast withdrawal, and the ability to use the drop directly on the site.

Before opening, always choose a comfortable budget, check the possible items, and remember that the result remains random. But if you care not only about opening a case, but also about choosing a mechanic that fits your goal, Farmskins gives you more options and more control over the process.
