Elden Ring Tarnished Edition Launches August 28: What's New & Is It Worth It?

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition

The Lands Between are about to become portable. Elden Ring Tarnished Edition launches worldwide on August 28, 2026, bringing FromSoftware’s massive open-world RPG to Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.

But this is more than a straightforward Switch 2 port. Tarnished Edition bundles the original Elden Ring with the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion and introduces several new extras, including two starting classes, four armor sets, and new customization options for Torrent.

Players on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox are not being left out either. The new gameplay content will also be released separately as the Tarnished Pack on August 28.

So, what exactly is included, and is Elden Ring Tarnished Edition worth buying? Here is everything you need to know.

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition Release Date and Platforms

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition releases on August 28, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2.

The edition includes:

  • The complete Elden Ring base game

  • Shadow of the Erdtree expansion

  • Two new starting classes

  • Four new armor sets

  • Three appearance customization options for Torrent

That makes Tarnished Edition essentially an all-in-one version of Elden Ring for Nintendo’s latest console, with some additional content added on top.

For existing players, the important detail is that the new extras are not exclusive to Switch 2. The separate Tarnished Pack launches on the same day for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.

What's New in Elden Ring Tarnished Edition?

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition

The biggest addition is obviously the Nintendo Switch 2 version itself. Elden Ring has been available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox since 2022, but Tarnished Edition finally brings the complete adventure to Nintendo hardware.

There is also enough new content to give veteran Tarnished a reason to pay attention.

Two New Starting Classes

Tarnished Edition introduces Heavy Knight and Knight of Idus, increasing the number of starting options available when creating a new character.

Starting classes in Elden Ring do not lock players into a particular playstyle forever, but they determine initial stats and equipment, making them particularly important for early-game builds.

Heavy Knight is the more obvious choice for players who prefer heavy melee combat. The class starts at level 10 and is built around strength, heavy equipment, and taking a more aggressive approach to fights.

Its starting gear includes new armor and a curved greatsword, making it an interesting option for players planning a strength-focused playthrough.

Knight of Idus, meanwhile, starts at level 7 and offers a more agile alternative. One particularly interesting detail is its access to Milady, the popular Light Greatsword originally introduced in Shadow of the Erdtree.

For returning players, these classes provide an easy excuse to create another character instead of simply continuing an existing save.

Four New Armor Sets

Fashion has always been part of the real Elden Ring endgame, and Tarnished Edition adds four new armor sets.

Two of these sets are naturally connected to the new starting classes, but the additional equipment also expands the game's customization and build possibilities.

The additions are not equivalent to a major expansion like Shadow of the Erdtree. Still, new armor matters in a game where players can spend hundreds of hours experimenting with combinations of weapons, equipment, stats, and character designs.

And, of course, sometimes the best armor is simply the one that makes your Tarnished look good.

Torrent Finally Gets Customization

Torrent has carried players across the Lands Between since Elden Ring launched, but the spectral steed has offered almost no visual customization.

Tarnished Edition finally changes that.

The new content includes three different appearance options for Torrent, allowing players to change the look of their loyal mount.

It is a relatively small addition compared with a new boss, region, or weapon category, but considering how much time players spend riding Torrent, additional customization feels long overdue.

Shadow of the Erdtree Is Included

For newcomers, this is arguably the most important part of the package.

Tarnished Edition includes Shadow of the Erdtree, Elden Ring's huge 2024 expansion, alongside the original game.

The DLC introduces the Realm of Shadow, new bosses, locations, weapons, armor, NPCs, quests, and additional lore. It significantly expands an already enormous RPG and provides some of the toughest encounters FromSoftware has created for Elden Ring.

That means Switch 2 players are not getting a cut-down starter version. Tarnished Edition provides access to the main game and its major expansion in one package.

What Is the Elden Ring Tarnished Pack?

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition

You do not need to buy the entire Tarnished Edition just to access the new classes and customization options.

On August 28, Bandai Namco will release the Tarnished Pack digitally for:

  • PlayStation 5

  • PlayStation 4

  • Xbox Series X|S

  • Xbox One

  • PC

The pack contains the same newly added gameplay content: Heavy Knight and Knight of Idus, four armor sets, and three Torrent customization skins.

Bandai Namco has listed the standard European price at €4.99, although regional pricing can vary.

This is an important distinction. Tarnished Edition is primarily the complete Nintendo Switch 2 release, while the Tarnished Pack acts as a small content add-on for people who already own Elden Ring elsewhere.

What About Performance on Nintendo Switch 2?

This is probably the biggest question surrounding Tarnished Edition.

Elden Ring can be demanding even on more powerful hardware, and the game's enormous open areas, enemy density, effects, and boss fights make bringing it to a portable console a considerable technical challenge.

Pre-release impressions of the Switch 2 version have been mixed depending on the build and event. Some hands-on reports have praised the handheld experience and responsiveness, while other previews of earlier builds raised concerns about frame-rate stability.

That makes performance one area where it is sensible to wait for testing of the final retail build before drawing firm conclusions.

For Switch 2 owners, the attraction is obvious: this is Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree on a portable Nintendo system. Whether that portability is worth potential visual or performance compromises will depend on how well the final version holds up after launch.

Is Elden Ring Tarnished Edition Worth It for New Players?

Yes, especially if Switch 2 is your preferred platform.

For someone who has never played Elden Ring, Tarnished Edition offers a huge amount of content in one package. You get the complete base adventure, Shadow of the Erdtree, and the additional Tarnished Edition content from the beginning.

Elden Ring itself remains one of FromSoftware's most accessible Souls-style games in terms of player freedom. If a boss is too difficult, you can explore somewhere else, upgrade equipment, find new summons, experiment with a different build, and return stronger.

There is still a serious difficulty curve, but the open-world structure gives players far more options for approaching it.

The Switch 2 release also adds something previous versions cannot fully replicate: the ability to explore the Lands Between on a portable Nintendo system.

Is It Worth It for Existing Elden Ring Players?

That answer is more complicated.

If you already own Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox, buying the complete game again purely for two classes, armor, and Torrent customization makes little sense.

Fortunately, you do not have to.

The €4.99 Tarnished Pack is a much more reasonable option for returning players who want the new content. It is inexpensive compared with a full expansion and provides enough extras to make a fresh playthrough slightly different.

The two starting classes are probably the strongest reason to return, particularly for players who enjoy experimenting with builds.

However, anyone expecting another Shadow of the Erdtree-sized experience should keep expectations under control. The Tarnished Pack is a small content release, not a second major expansion.

Should You Buy Elden Ring Again on Switch 2?

This depends almost entirely on how much you value portability.

If you already own the complete game elsewhere and mostly play at home, there is little reason to start over on another platform solely because Tarnished Edition exists.

But if the idea of exploring Limgrave, fighting bosses, or farming runes on a handheld system appeals to you, Switch 2 gives Elden Ring a genuinely different use case.

The main thing worth checking after launch will be performance. A stable portable version could make Tarnished Edition one of the most impressive third-party releases available on Switch 2. Significant frame-rate or visual compromises, on the other hand, could make existing PC and current-gen console versions more attractive.

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition: Is It Worth It?

For new Switch 2 players, Tarnished Edition is easy to recommend on content alone. It combines the original Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree, and all of the newly announced Tarnished content into one release.

For existing Elden Ring players, the separate Tarnished Pack is probably the better deal. At €4.99 in Europe, it adds two classes, four armor sets, and three Torrent appearances without requiring you to purchase the full game again.

For existing players considering the Switch 2 version, portability is the deciding factor. Waiting for final performance comparisons before double-dipping is the safest option.

Either way, August 28 gives players another reason to return to the Lands Between, whether that means starting as a Heavy Knight, experimenting with the Knight of Idus, giving Torrent a new look, or experiencing Elden Ring for the first time.
