9z Team Defeats Aurora in Thunderpick World Championship 2026 Opener

On October 14, 2026, Aurora Gaming faced 9z Team in the opening Group A match of Thunderpick World Championship 2026, held in Malta.

Aurora entered the match as the favorite. The team was ranked significantly higher than its opponent in the Valve Regional Standings and had recently finished third at ESL Pro League Season 24.

Additionally, Aurora had already defeated 9z during the ESL Pro League group stage. This time, however, the South American squad managed to get its revenge.

The series ended with a 2-0 victory for 9z. The first map remained competitive until the final rounds, while Aurora struggled to put up any resistance on the second.

Aurora vs. 9z Team Match Results

The match was played in a best-of-three format, but only two maps were needed to determine the winner.

• Inferno: 9z Team 13-11 Aurora Gaming

• Nuke: 9z Team 13-1 Aurora Gaming

• Final series score: 9z Team 2-0 Aurora Gaming

The series began on Inferno, which was selected by 9z Team.

Aurora managed to keep the game competitive and remained in contention until the closing rounds. However, the South American lineup performed better in the decisive moments and secured a 13-11 victory.

The situation was completely different on Nuke.

Despite Aurora choosing the map, the team managed to win only a single round. 9z controlled the match from start to finish and closed out the map with a dominant 13-1 scoreline.

As a result, Aurora lost the series without winning a map and began its tournament campaign with a major setback.

luchov Named the Best Player of the Match

The standout performer of the series was Argentine player Luciano "luchov" Herrera from 9z Team.

According to HLTV statistics, he finished the series with 38 kills and 20 deaths, earning a 1.61 rating.

His average damage per round reached 97.4, making him one of the key contributors to the South American squad's victory.

Matias "HUASOPEEK" Ibanez Hernandez also delivered an impressive performance, finishing the match with 31 kills and a 1.45 rating.

For Aurora, Finnish player Jimi "Jimpphat" Salo recorded the best individual statistics. He secured 32 kills against 29 deaths and ended the series with a 1.19 rating.

The remaining Aurora players were unable to deliver comparable performances. The match was particularly difficult for captain Damjan "kyxsan" Stoilkovski, who finished with nine kills and 29 deaths.

Why Was Aurora's Defeat So Surprising?

Aurora entered Thunderpick World Championship 2026 as one of the stronger teams in the competition.

At ESL Pro League Season 24, the team managed to finish third after securing several important victories against strong opponents.

Meanwhile, 9z Team had struggled with inconsistent results during the second half of the season.

Despite a successful appearance at PGL Astana and reaching the playoffs of IEM Cologne Major 2026, the South American squad had subsequently suffered several consecutive group-stage exits at major tournaments.

Aurora's recent head-to-head victory over 9z at ESL Pro League Season 24 provided another reason to consider the Turkish team the favorite.

Therefore, the 0-2 result became one of the first major surprises of Thunderpick World Championship 2026, while the 1-13 defeat on Nuke made Aurora's disappointing start even more remarkable.

Who Will Aurora Face Next?

Following the defeat, Aurora dropped into the lower bracket of Group A.

Their next opponent will be the loser of the match between Team Falcons and Ninjas in Pyjamas.

The upcoming series will be decisive: another defeat will eliminate Aurora from Thunderpick World Championship 2026.

Meanwhile, 9z Team advanced to the Group A winners' match. The South American squad will face the winner of the Falcons vs. Ninjas in Pyjamas series.

A victory in its next match would secure 9z a place in the tournament playoffs.

Thunderpick World Championship 2026: Format and Prize Pool

Thunderpick World Championship 2026 takes place from October 14 to 18 in Malta.

Eight teams are competing for a total prize pool of $1 million.

The group stage follows the GSL format, with matches played as best-of-three series. The top two teams from each group advance to the playoffs, where the competition continues in a single-elimination bracket.

For Aurora, the tournament has started much worse than expected. The team will need to address its mistakes quickly, particularly those exposed on Nuke, to keep its chances of advancing from the group alive.

At the same time, 9z Team secured an important victory against one of the tournament's strongest participants and took its first step toward reaching the playoffs.

The next match will determine whether Aurora can recover from its crushing defeat and continue competing for the Thunderpick World Championship 2026 title.
