Thunderpick World Championship 2026 in Malta: $1M, 8 Teams & the Virtus.pro Comeback

From October 14 to 18, Malta will host the Thunderpick World Championship 2026, a major Counter-Strike 2 LAN tournament with a $1 million prize pool. Only eight teams will compete in the finals: FURIA, Falcons, Legacy, Aurora, BETBOOM, 9z, PARIVISION, and Virtus.pro.
For VP, the trip to Malta carries extra significance. The team earned the only spot available through the closed qualifier and, following their successful run, returned to the top 30 of the global Valve Regional Standings for the first time in roughly a year. Now, Virtus.pro will have a chance to test their revamped roster against much stronger international competition.

Who Will Play at Thunderpick World Championship 2026?

Seven teams received direct invitations to TWC 2026 based on their VRS positions. FURIA, Falcons, Legacy, Aurora, BETBOOM, 9z, and PARIVISION all secured direct spots. The eighth and final place was decided through the closed qualifier, where Virtus.pro came out on top.
FURIA and Falcons enter the tournament as two of the biggest favorites. FURIA will arrive in Malta as the reigning Thunderpick World Championship champions. In the 2025 grand final, the Brazilian team defeated NAVI 3-2, completing an impressive comeback after losing the opening two maps.
Falcons are expected to be one of their main challengers, with Legacy and Aurora also among the teams to watch. All four teams were inside the global VRS top 10 when the tournament lineup was announced. BETBOOM, 9z, and PARIVISION complete the list of invited teams, giving TWC 2026 a diverse field in terms of both regions and playing styles.
The tournament format leaves little room for a slow start. The eight teams will be divided into two double-elimination groups. The top two teams from each group will advance to the playoffs, where the tournament switches to a single-elimination bracket. All matches will be played as best-of-three series, while the grand final will be a best-of-five.
Virtus.pro Return to a Major LAN
Virtus.pro are arguably the biggest wildcard among the eight participants. Unlike the seven invited teams, VP had to fight their way through a 16-team closed qualifier to secure their ticket to Malta.
Their run did not start smoothly, as Virtus.pro suffered an early defeat to K27. They quickly recovered, however, beating BESTIA before getting revenge against K27. In the playoffs, VP went on to defeat FOKUS, HEROIC, and HOTU to claim the final spot at the Thunderpick World Championship.
The result was important for more than just qualification. Before the event, Virtus.pro sat at No. 40 in the global VRS. Following their string of victories, they climbed to No. 29, returning to the Valve rankings' top 30 for the first time in roughly a year.
It is a significant step for a team that previously dropped outside the VRS top 100 and effectively rebuilt its roster around younger players after a difficult period. Thunderpick World Championship 2026 will also be the current Virtus.pro lineup's first major international LAN appearance since IEM Chengdu 2025.

Why TWC 2026 Is Worth Watching
Thunderpick World Championship 2026 stands out thanks to its compact format and competitive lineup. Only eight teams will battle for a $1 million prize pool, with reigning champions FURIA, Falcons, and several other highly ranked VRS teams in attendance.
Virtus.pro's performance will provide another major storyline. Their qualifier run has already brought them back into the VRS top 30, but Malta will show whether VP are ready to compete consistently against stronger international opposition.
For Virtus.pro, it is an opportunity to turn a promising run into a genuine comeback. For the other participants, TWC 2026 offers a chance to claim a major trophy and strengthen their position heading into the next important events of the season.
Thunderpick World Championship 2026 takes place in Malta from October 14 to 18. Eight teams, a $1 million prize pool, FURIA defending their title, and Virtus.pro fighting their way back onto the big stage give fans plenty of reasons to follow the action from the very first match.
